Introduction Welcome to the resource page for Learning Music with GarageBand on the iPad. This pages contains songs which are suitable for performance by iPad ensembles, or for solos with iPad accompaniments. Teaching activities for these materials are described in chapter nine of the book. There is also a set of sampled waves which can be used to add additional instruments to GarageBand for recording or performance. If you don't have the book, you may purchase a copy here. Songs The songs below are organized by decade and category as follows: Decades: 1940s - Blues, Swing 1950s - Doo Wop 1960s - Rock 1970s - Rock 1980s - Dance Music, Ballads 1990s - Ballads 2000s - Ballads and Techno Cultures: Ireland, Japan, Cuba, Africa, Mexico, Jamaica, Australia, Appalachia, Events: Birthdays, Holidays Just for Fun: Dances, Celebrations, Parties File Types Among the resources below are three specific types of files: .wav files are recordings of each song. Click and listen, or right click and download. .pdf files are the music notation for each song. Click and view, or right click and download. .zip files are compressed versions of the GarageBand files for iOS. Right-click and download. Downloading Each song may be downloaded one at a time, or the entire collection may be downloaded here: System Requirements The .band files are designed to play on iOS 7 or later using GarageBand 2.0 for iOS or later. These files may also be opened using GarageBand for Mac version 10 or later, or in Logic Pro X or later. Earlier versions of GarageBand and Logic cannot open these .band files. Using the Downloaded Files .wav files may be copied into iTunes or placed in course management software for easy access by students. .pdf files may be displayed on the iPad using e-mail or similar applications (DropBox, Google Docs, etc.). .band files are to be used in GarageBand on the iPad, but may be opened in GarageBand 10 or Logic Pro X on the Macintosh. .band files cannot be opened on Windows computers. Copying the .band Files to the iPad Copying the .band files to an iPad is best accomplished through iTunes FileSharing. The process is described in chapter 1 of the book, but by way of summary. (1) Download the .band files to your computer (if they are downloaded as .zip files, double-click to expand). (2) Connect your iPad to your Macintosh with a cable and open iTunes. (3) Click on the device icon in iTunes, then on the App tab. (4) Click on GarageBand in the file sharing portion of the screen (scroll to near the bottom). (5) Drag the files from the Macintosh finder into the iTunes file sharing window for GarageBand. With iOS 8 and higher and MacOS 10.10 (Yosemite) and higher, it is possible to use Air Drop to copy select files from the iPad to the Mac and vice versa. Opening .band Files on the iPad It may take a minute for the files to copy from the Macintosh to the iPad through iTunes File Sharing. Once they are copied, they may be opened as follows. (1) Run GarageBand 2.0 on the iPad. (2) Navigate to the Song List screen, and click the "+" button. (3) Choose "Copy from iTunes File Sharing." (4) Select the desired song from those available. The song will be added to the Song List in GarageBand for iOS, and can be opened and edited there. Adding Extra Instruments to GarageBand for iOS Using the Sampler This book comes with additional instruments which can be used with GarageBand through it's sampler. This is especially useful when instruments which do not come with GarageBand are needed. For example, GarageBand does not have a rolled timpani sound. To use these instruments, (1) copy the instrument files to the iPad, and (2) import them into the sampler. This is done through iTunes file sharing, similar to the process for copying songs from the Macintosh to the iPad: Copying Sampled Instruments to the iPad (1) Download the .wav files for the desired instruments to your computer. (2) Connect your iPad to your Macintosh with a cable and open iTunes. (3) Click on the device icon in iTunes, then on the App tab. (4) Click on GarageBand in the file sharing portion of the screen (scroll to near the bottom). (5) Drag the files from the Macintosh finder into the iTunes file sharing window for GarageBand. Using Instruments in the GarageBand iOS Sampler It may take a minute for the files to copy from the Macintosh to the iPad through iTunes File Sharing. Once they are copied, they may be used in GarageBand's sampler as follows. (1) Run GarageBand 2.0 on the iPad. (2) Navigate to the desired song, and click the "+" button to create a new track. (3) Choose "Sampler" for the desired instrument. (4) Click the import button, then "Audio Files" and select the desired instrument. (5) You may customize the sound somewhat with GarageBand's Sampler features. (6) Record your music in GarageBand on the iPad using this instrument. |
